abilities: he can sing real good and his mental illness is very strong
personality: important to keep in mind is that ivan has had an extremely unusual upbringing: he lived on his own in a universe ruled by aliens where humans are considered pets and do not have their own agency. while we don't know the exact age (or even his birthday) ivan was picked up to become a pet, we can probably throw out a guess of somewhere between 5~7 years old based on appearances. until then, ivan had to fend for himself, as he was born in the human slums and not born a "product" like other children.
once adopted, his caretakers referred to him as a gloomy child whose emotional development was slow. until he "grew as tall as the average kid," he exhibited concerning behaviors like kleptomania and playing potentially dangerous tricks on other children. as a child he's also said to have shown "unexplainable gloomy behavior," though without any explicit clarification as to what those behaviors are— though it is shown that, as a child, he often kept to himself and was more of solitary person. and being as he grew, he practiced mimicking other behaviors of children and refining his expressions to better blend in with both his peers and his guardians and keep himself safe. it seems to have worked out for him: by the time he graduated from his class, other children admired him, some to the point of developing feelings for him.
ivan's personality by adulthood would most likely be described as "twisted," but only beneath the surface. he adopts whatever personality he feels will keep him safe and help him the most: one that smiles easily and comes across as mature, a little mysterious and mostly well-mannered, likeable young man. as a performer, his fandom considers him "handsome, gentle and professional," and he manages his interaction with is fandom well, always delivering amicable responses in interviews. from an outside perspective, these polite responses become muddled in their truth with the knowledge that the personality ivan answer questions with is one he manufactured for himself for his own protection.
the people who have seen through his mask are few and far between, and even then, it's through cracks, never fully unmasked.
in truth, ivan is an extremely obsessive person, though not over just anything. once his obsession is decided— in this case, over another boy named till— ivan will do whatever he can to get attention from them, whether good or bad, though the concept of "good and bad" is grey to him at best; ivan was not raised with that kind of emotional intelligence. because of this lack of guidance and love (or any kind of adult figure who would have taught him how to understand his emotions), he has trouble not only with his own emotions but interpreting the emotions of others.
for example, seeing love between two of his classmates that does not match the attention that till shows ivan leads him to believe he is not loved by him at all, and even more, believes that till does not care about him whatsoever.
a lot of human things are foreign to him, and in etraya he'll likely have to face experiences he would not have back on his world,partially because he is fucking dead and interacting with so many humans, especially those who have never been someone else's pet, will be interesting for him to navigate.
i do tend to write him with the idea that he might be autistic in mind, so. that's something
